Addicted to the Camino?

by | Jan 22, 2018 | Philosophy, Thoughts

I’m obsessed with the Camino.

Some people seem to get addicted to the Camino. They go again and again and just can’t seem to get enough. I’m one of those people. I’ve been on the Camino Francés 4 times now (as of 2017) and hope to go every year or two for as long as I can.

For me, each journey isn’t about being in the same place, it’s about seeing the same place from a different perspective. Each time I’ve climbed up to the Cruz de Ferro, I am different person than I was the last time – I am with different people, I am in a different time in my life, I think and feel different things. Life swirls all around us, it changes every day. It doesn’t matter where you are physically, your experiences from day to day are rarely the same. I was inspired in this philosophy by an art piece in my hometown of Toronto. It is a bridge with the words “This river I step in is not the river I stand in”. This piece was, in turn, inspired by the Greek philosopher Heraclitus, who said “No man ever steps in the same river twice”. I feel that way about the Camino. Even though I’m travelling on basically the same route, each journey is very different.

Having said that… I’d still like to try out the Portuguese route some day.
